Players Fantasy Managers Should Hold

In the fast-paced world of fantasy football, it's easy for fantasy managers to succumb to panic after just a few weeks of NFL action. However, with 18 weeks in the season, it's essential to remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint. Bad games, injuries, and unpredictable twists are par for the course, and hastily dropping certain players can come back to haunt you later. Trading away valuable assets for peanuts may seem tempting, but it's essential to exercise caution.

In this edition of Gridiron Goal Post, we'll guide you through the players you should consider holding onto early in the season. These players have the potential to become indispensable as the season unfolds, propelling your team to the playoffs. Success in fantasy football isn't about a quick dash to the finish line; it's about maintaining depth and making strategic decisions that pay off over time. So, hang tight, fellow fantasy managers, and discover the players who could be your ticket to a strong finish in this season's fantasy football marathon.

Dameon Pierce

Dameon Pierce has faced a challenging start to the NFL season, accumulating just 100 yards on 40 attempts in the first three weeks. In week 3, Pierce saved his fantasy day with a touchdown, earning him 14 fantasy PPR points.

While some fantasy managers may be tempted to hit the panic button and consider trading or dropping him, keeping him on your fantasy bench is vital. The Houston Texans have encountered significant issues with their offensive line, plagued by injuries that have left them vulnerable to opposing defenses. Consequently, the Texans have shifted towards a pass-heavy offense, funneling targets to players like Nico Collins and Tank Dell.

However, as the offensive line regains its health, there's a strong likelihood that Dameon Pierce will return to his previous form. In the upcoming matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he could find his stride, given that the Steelers have allowed the sixth-most fantasy points to running backs thus far. As the season progresses, Pierce is poised to become more productive, and there's optimism that he can finish the season as a dependable RB2 option. It's important not to undervalue him in trades at this juncture.

Garrett Wilson

Garrett Wilson and the Jets' offense entered this season with high expectations, but their prospects took a hit when Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear. Zach Wilson has struggled to assert control over the offense, resulting in a significant decline in Garrett Wilson's fantasy stock. Many fantasy managers are reacting swiftly, considering benching, trading, or even dropping him from their rosters. It's apparent that Garrett Wilson's fantasy value relies heavily on touchdowns. Fortunately, he's had just one game this season with fewer than 10 PPR fantasy points, which occurred in a matchup against one of the greatest coaches of all time, Bill Belichick. That game was also marred by adverse weather conditions, with rain and wind affecting the passing game, adding to the challenge.

It's worth noting that Garrett Wilson is consistently seeing an increasing number of targets. In the upcoming home game against the Kansas City Chiefs, a team known for their offensive prowess, the Jets' defense is expected to face a significant challenge. This could lead to a pass-heavy approach by the Jets, with Zach Wilson likely forced to throw more than usual. Ideally, these increased throws would be directed toward Garrett Wilson. Even if he has another subpar game next week, it's advisable not to rush into selling him. The Jets may explore the possibility of acquiring another quarterback to replace Zach Wilson, which could provide an instant boost to Garrett Wilson's fantasy prospects. While it's a long shot, potential quarterback targets for the Jets could include Jacobi Brissett, Colt McCoy, or Carson Wentz. In a less likely scenario, they might even trade for Kirk Cousins, who currently stands at 0-3 with the Vikings. An upgrade at the quarterback position can elevate Garrett Wilson back to WR1 territory, making him a valuable asset rather than a risky flex option. For now, it's wise to hold onto him and resist the urge to part ways prematurely.

Rachaad White

While the running game in Tampa Bay may not have been the most electrifying spectacle this season, there's one undeniable truth – when it comes to RB1 status in this backfield, Rachaad White stands alone. He's been soaking up rushing attempts like a sponge, and that kind of volume alone should be reason enough for fantasy managers to hold on tight. In his last three games, White has registered impressive rushing attempts with numbers like 17, 17, and 16, showcasing his ability to handle a significant workload.

Admittedly, White's involvement in the passing game hasn't quite hit the sweet spot yet. The check-downs in his direction have been relatively scarce thus far. However, as the season unfolds, there's a good chance his role in the passing game could be boosted. An uptick in passing volume would undoubtedly elevate his fantasy value, making him an even more valuable asset for fantasy managers.

It's fair to label Rachaad White as a bit of a boom-or-bust player at this stage, with only one game where he exploded for over 20 PPR points. But here's the silver lining: White has been entrusted with almost all the goal-line rushing attempts, which could translate to precious touchdowns. So, think twice before you rush to make any hasty decisions on him.

Breece Hall

Hall displayed immense potential and remarkable talent until an unfortunate ACL injury interrupted his promising trajectory. During the offseason, the Jets running back worked his way back to full health, yet the addition of Dalvin Cook to their roster raised concerns among fantasy enthusiasts. Surprisingly, Hall and Cook have failed to deliver significant production thus far. Across three games, Breece Hall has accumulated a modest total of 20.3 fantasy points. Similarly, Dalvin Cook has yet to make a substantial impact in this backfield, amassing a mere 15 combined PPR fantasy points over his initial three appearances.

The Jets' offensive performance has been far from inspiring, falling short of the lofty expectations held at the season's outset. Nevertheless, glimpses of Hall's undeniable talent have occasionally emerged, suggesting that he may still be shaking off the rust from his ACL injury. Looking ahead, there's a strong likelihood that Breece Hall will ascend to the status of a bona fide RB1 in this offense. An increase in volume would be a key factor in his favor. Additionally, his limited involvement in the passing game, marked by just two receptions this season, leaves room for improvement, especially in PPR formats. Should Hall become more integrated into the aerial attack, he could soon become a dependable flex consideration.

For now, it might be best to temporarily bench him while awaiting a resurgence in the Jets' offensive prowess, particularly in the absence of Aaron Rodgers.
